MANAGING EDITOR, Canadian Grocer

Location:  Office located in Toronto, ON (Please note: EIQ is open to hiring the right candidate to work remotely for this role anywhere in Canada)

EnsembleIQ is seeking a Managing Editor for Canadian Grocer, a 135-year-old business-to-business media brand covering the interests of Canada’s grocery retailers. Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Managing Editor’s key responsibility is managing the day-to-day needs of Canadian Grocer’s editorial content production. The Managing Editor helps plan, assign, edit and also write content. The candidate must have a passion for exceptional editorial content, a good understanding of print and digital media and superior attention to detail.


Key responsibilities:

  • Generates story ideas and assigns stories to freelance writers while staying within budget guidelines

  • Writes and edits engaging, high-quality content primarily for print publication and occasionally digital content

  • Leads weekly editorial meetings

  • Interacts regularly with managers in other key departments to ensure business goals and opportunities are met

  • Cultivate relationships with key industry sources to help build Canadian Grocer’s community

  • Assist in the planning and execution of Canadian Grocer events

  • Represents the brand at industry events

  • Other responsibilities could be assigned based on evolving business needs

Job requirements

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field

  • Minimum 3 – 5 years of demonstrated editorial experience (B2B preferred)

  • Keen sense of integrity and high journalistic standards experience

  • Skilled content manager, proficient in planning and executing multiple simultaneous projects in a deadline-oriented environment

  • Superior writing and editing skills and strong knowledge of Canadian Press style conventions

  • Demonstrated knowledge of print production required; knowledge of web publishing an asset

  • Technical proficiency, with hands-on experience using current software and programs such as Drupal (or related program) Google Suite, Microsoft Word, etc.

  • Outstanding organizational, communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to teamwork
