We are looking for a Payroll & Benefits and General Accountant (hybrid role) to join the Hydrow team! Reporting to our VP Controller and working closely with our Chief of People Officer and People Operations team, this newly created position will play a key role in scaling our payroll and benefits accounting operations. 


  • Act as an internal subject-matter expert for payroll-related projects, topics, and tasks, including but not limited to improvements to internal policies and procedures to ensure scalability;
  • Manage the day-to-day payroll operations including reviewing, validating, running, and reconciling payroll data to ensure accurate payroll payments and reporting on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Work with the Chief People Officer and People Operations team to ensure all severance payments, monthly benefits, and bonus accruals are tracked accurately.
  • Using Netsuite daily to perform job functions, conduct research and analysis
  • Identify recommendations to scale processes to enhance payroll operational efficiency including the design and implementation of internal controls, policies and procedures.
  • In charge of preparation and filing W-2 forms and 3921 forms
  • Ensure all payroll related tax filings are completed timely and accurately, including the creation of new accounts with various federal, state, and local agencies as required; Work with tax agencies and payroll service providers to resolve tax issues.
  • Work with the VP Controller during the month-end close process, including preparing journal entries to be uploaded to the Accounting General Ledger, reviewing and reconciling monthly and quarterly reporting to ensure accuracy of payroll and identify corrections as needed.
  • Performing general bookkeeping and organize financial forms, documents and receipts, including accounts payable related tasks
  • Completes payments and controls expenses by receiving, processing, verifying, and reconciling invoices
  • Supporting general ledger accounting and the timely monthly close process including preparing and booking journal entries and preparing account reconciliations. Areas of responsibilities include fixed assets, certain prepaids, certain accruals and credit card activities
  • Reconciles processed work by verifying entries and comparing system reports to balances
  • Charges expenses to accounts and cost centers by analyzing invoice/expense reports; recording entries
  • Creates vendors
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned such as but not limited to assisting with various balance sheet and income statement account reconciliations

  • Technical Chops: Job-related technical skills needed to complete the work at a high level of quality. In-depth knowledge of multi-state payroll regulations, registration and reporting requirements. Experience with NetSuite, preferred proficiency with Ceridian and Zenefits.
  • Self-Motivated: Capable of seeking quality solutions and continuously focusing on process improvements, while keeping the needs of the business in the forefront.
  • Analytical Skills & Attention to Detail: Able to structure and process qualitative or quantitative data and draw insightful conclusions from it. Exhibits a probing mind and achieves penetrating insights. Does not let important details slip through the cracks or derail a project.
  • Comfort with Ambiguity:  Some of your work will be one-time in nature while other projects will be more recurring. You need to be comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty, and able to communicate with others to keep them abreast of your work and get the buy-in you need to continue.
