Director, Information Technology and Security
The Director, Information Technology and Security will establish and own the overall strategies and procedures for Newsela’s IT and security domains. You will develop and implement IT security and business continuity/disaster recovery programs in accordance with organizational IT and security standards. You’ll also evaluate information risk on an established cadence and promote information security awareness within the organization. You’ll develop functional strategies and specific objectives for IT security, as well as manage budgets, policies, and procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Additionally, you’ll oversee the effective management and support of device inventory and allocation, and will implement cost-effective strategies to ensure best practice equipment inventories. You’ll also oversee the security of Newsela’s CSP-hosted applications and environments (including AWS, GCP, and Azure) and Newsela’s Google Workspace instance. Reporting to the Vice President of IT Operations, you’ll manage a small team consisting of an Information Security Architect and an IT Operations Manager. You will partner closely with Newsela’s Legal team to monitor regulation compliance (e.g. Student PII) and will work across teams to ensure alignment and adherence to security policies and best practices.
Why You’ll Love This Role:
In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to grow Newslea’s IT and Security functions and teams in alignment with Newsela’s growth. Your work will directly impact our team’s ability to provide secure and reliable solutions to our users (teachers and students), and ultimately impact the learning experience for K-12 schools across the country. Additionally, you’ll help establish new processes to enable scalability of Newsela’ IT infrastructure and will be a champion of documentation and best-in-class security practices throughout the company. As part of Newsela’s broader Technology team, you will get to work in a team that is deeply committed to a culture of teaching and learning, and will have opportunities to provide and receive mentorship.
Why We’ll Love You:
You have 8+ years of IT and Security experience, with at least 5+ years of managerial experience. You are CCSP (Certified Cloud Security Professional) certified as well as Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and ideally have at least one of the following other industry certifications: CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor), CRISC Certified In Risk & Information Systems Control), or ISACA (Information Systems Audit & Control Association). You have demonstrated success working in a decentralized, cloud-first, hosted application environment, and possess knowledge of a wide range of IT systems and a deep understanding of the inherent security risks associated with these technologies. You’re deeply familiar with information security principles and best practices (e.g., ISO27001, SOC 2, NIST CSF and ISF Standards of Good Practice for Information Security) and are able to translate these to a variety of non-technical audiences for understanding and adoption. You also have a strong understanding of IT networking and access management concepts, and can assess technology systems and applications from both a technical and business function perspective. You’re an expert communicator, who can seamlessly navigate highly technical conversations as well as presentations focused on business strategy and needs.
